There is a tremendous amount of attention within the landscape industry with regard to the benefits of applying practices and methods that promote sustainability. A newly released publication entitled "SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT; Standards for Landscape Care in the Desert Southwest" written by Janet Waibel, Landscape Architect and certified arborist, was adopted last September by the Arizona Landscape Contractors' Association and promoted as the standard that offers best recommended practices for typical landscape maintenance/management scenarios.

Since September, ALCA has been promoting the standards outlined in the SLM to various organizations requesting their endorsement. The responses have been extremely positive. The Arizona Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater Phoenix (BOMA) have officially endorsed SLM. Their name and logo will be included in the next printing of the publication. Other organizations that are receptive and preparing their endorsement or promotion of SLM include: City of Phoenix, City of Tempe, SRP, a number of Community Management Companies (Brown Management, Association Community Mangers and Rossmar and Graham), Arizona Association of Community Managers (AAM), and Community Associations Institute (CAI).

The results from applying the principles outline in this book will improve productivity and efficiency while promoting sustainability; employ practices which strive to preserve limited and valuable natural resources such as water and plant materials, reduce waste generation and strive for longevity and maturity of plant materials.
